Prescription Drug Plans

Prescription drugs are a major part of your overall health and wellness. As you manage your daily health, you need a plan that makes your medications affordable and easy to access. Original Medicare does not typically cover the prescription drugs you take at home. This is why Medicare Part D exists. Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare to help you pay for your brand-name and generic drugs. At Cascadia Insurance, we help seniors in Bellingham and across Washington find the right drug coverage to fit their specific health needs.

A standalone Part D plan works alongside your Original Medicare coverage. By adding this plan, you get a reliable way to pay for the medications you use every day. It provides a financial buffer against high pharmacy costs. Whether you take one medication or several, having the right plan makes a real difference in your monthly budget.

Understanding How Plans Work

Every Medicare Part D plan has a list of covered drugs known as a formulary. Each plan chooses its own list, so coverage can vary from one company to the next. Plans often group these drugs into different levels called tiers. Drugs in lower tiers generally cost less than those in higher tiers. Tiers usually include options for preferred generics, standard generics, preferred brands, and specialty drugs.

The specific drugs your plan covers and the amount you pay for them depend on which plan you choose. Some plans may require prior authorization or ask you to try a lower-cost alternative first. This is called step therapy. Our goal at Cascadia Insurance is to help you look at your current list of medications and find a plan that includes them at the lowest possible cost. We take the guesswork out of comparing formularies so you can feel confident in your coverage.

Financial Protection for Your Health

Medical costs can change throughout the year. Medicare Part D plans help you manage these changes by setting clear rules for what you pay. You typically pay a monthly premium and potentially a yearly deductible. Once you meet your deductible, you enter the initial coverage phase where you pay a copayment or coinsurance for your drugs.

Starting in 2026, all Part D plans have a maximum out-of-pocket limit for covered drugs. This cap is set at $2,100. Once you spend this amount on covered medications for the year, your plan pays one hundred percent of your costs for the rest of the year. This provides significant protection for people who take high-cost medications. We explain these coverage phases at Cascadia Insurance so you understand how your plan protects your finances.

When to Enroll in Coverage

It is important to enroll in a drug plan at the right time. Your first chance to join is during your Initial Enrollment Period. This begins three months before the month you turn sixty-five and ends three months after your birth month. If you do not enroll when you are first eligible and you do not have other creditable drug coverage, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty later on. This penalty is added to your monthly premium for as long as you have Part D coverage.

You can also make changes to your plan during the Annual Enrollment Period. This runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. During this time, you can switch to a plan that better fits the medications you take. Life events like moving to a new area may also qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. We stay on top of these dates at Cascadia Insurance to make sure you never miss your window to secure the coverage you need.
